Dear FA Families –
I would like to update you each month about the activities we have going on in the 5th, 6th (Upper Elementary) and 7th grade (Middle School) math classes. Each of the classes have been settling in nicely; quickly getting to work building upon the background knowledge each of your students has within the very broad domain of mathematics. In our first few weeks together, students of all knowledge levels have been working on concepts relating to Number Sense and Mathematic Operations.
Upper Elementary:
Forwards: These students have been working on fine tuning their basic multiplication facts through the practice of both modeling basic multiplication and division, as well as using standard algorithms to solve problems with double digit multipliers and divisors. Students have applied four basic properties of multiplication: distributive, commutative, associative, and identity property. We discovered and discussed the patterns that reveal themselves when multiplying and dividing by powers of 10, as well as interpreting what those leftovers in division (the remainder as you and I know them) really represent.
Midfielders and Backs: These students have been exploring order of operations, paying a new found attention to the role that exponents and brackets play when working the appropriate order. Additionally, we have been learning how to breakdown a number into its prime factorization, and then build it back up in ways to find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of several numbers. Lastly, we have begun to discuss beginning algebra concepts: variables, coefficients, terms, and solving one step equations.
Resources: Daily Lessons are supported with textbook material form several math publishers. www.tenmarks.com, www.khanacademy.org, http://www.azed.gov/standards-practices/mathematics-standards-2/
Middle School:
Our middle school students have gotten off to a very good start with a review of all operations with fractions and decimals, as well as converting from one to the other, reminding us that they are one in the same. As the basis for all good things to come, having a strong comfort level with these operations is key. We have now moved on to working with all operations pertaining to integers. In all cases, student will be challenged to take the concepts they are learning in class, and apply them to “real world” situations throughout the course of each semester.
